I.Presentations: "Overview of Oracle Tutor"
Stuart Dunsmore - Oracle Corp.
Content is taken from Oracle course material in an MS Word format.
Screen specific material that is a shot of your customized screens and apps.
Labs and exercises from courseware are pulled out for use. Database for these
can be mocked-up for client specific data elements.
Two Major Tools:
- Author - Using MS Word it is used to:
create and update training documents (client specific)
create and update process flow documents (client specific)
links changes in training documentation to drive changes in process flow
documentation including a macro to auto renumber steps and redraw effected flow
charts
utilize shell and template functions to speed delivery
import documentation from standard Oracle courseware
- Publisher - used to deliver and display docs created in the Author tool.
Customized content by role or user-defined classes - controls distribution.
Using an HTML format allows user to use hypertext to link to other training doc,
manuals, or even web sites. Allows creation of job titles to control access
Allows user to attach various chapters from the curriculum, desk/procedures
manual, and tutorial to build job specific content.
Tutor really addresses `knowledge evaporation' that occurs when consultants and
field representatives go home. Captures the work and knowledge that is usually
lost.
Very useful for building job description from actual process and training
documentation.
Variety of reports to maintain, control, and organize publisher tool.
(including an orphans report).

III. Presentation: "Confessions of a Project Manager"
Lynn Taskett - Deloitte-Touche Consulting
- On Planning
- There is not a single Plan
- Your plan may be in competition with others
- Every project is vital, not just yours
- Anticipate change
- Set expectations and manage them
- Spot opportunities in the plans of others
- Plans Can be too large
- Large scale projects cannot be managed with a single plan
- Teams must develop their component plans
- Mega-projects require special planning and support
- If you don't know where you are headed, any plan will get you there
- Well defined objectives are vital
- Establish a target design and prove or adjust it
- Communicate the plan or it will mutate
- Discovery should be performed up front
- It is difficult to get traction if there is no concept model
- It's a marathon, not a sprint
- Balance the expedient implementation against realistic expectations
- There is such a thing as burn-out
- Holidays, vacations and sick time need to be factored in
- Build time to have fun
- Plan for some slack time, projects have cycles
- On Teams
- There are teams, work groups and "pseudo Teams"
- Work groups have one person in charge, individual accountability and separation
of the thinkers and the workers
- Teams share leadership, have joint accountability and no separation between the
thinkers and the doers
- Teams have specific performance goals and share a common approach
- Teams are not created, they evolve naturally when given a difficult set of goals
to achieve
- On Measuring Success
- Define success based on moving targets
- The business will continue to evolve
- Stakeholder interests will change
- You can't manage success if you can't measure it
- Project success is defined by business recognition of the benefits achieved
- On Training
- Different groups have different needs
- Train based on roles
- Deliver process vs. module or transaction based training (Oracle Tutor)
- Communicate Plans
- On Managing Change
- There is no excitement unless you generate it
- Your project is not important to the business user if they don't understand it
- Commitment lasts a very short time
- Change is not sustainable without repetition
- If you are not visible, neither is your project
- Change management begins with scoping and planning
- Support for the project is not achieved through a single sponsor or committee
